Used tennis racquets: what should you pay? Reference prices, family by family
The price of a used racquet is not a quote. It is an order of magnitude, which moves with the frame's condition, its generation, its version and demand at the time. But an order of magnitude is enough to tell whether a listing is reasonable, too good to be true, or too expensive.
The reference points below come from the used racquet tool: 36 frame families, 105 versions, nine brands, each with a used price recorded by hand and the new price of the closest current model.
What sets the price
Generation. A family loses value with every new version. Older generations of a given model often go for 45 to 70 €.
Version. Within a family, light versions resell for less than standard ones, and heavy versions for a little more.
Rarity. Frames made for professional players, known as pro stock, go above 150 €: there are few of them, and they are sought after. See what pro stock racquets really are.
Condition. A cracked frame is worth nothing, whatever the model. Nor is the string: you are going to replace it.

Reading the gap between used and new
For most families, the used price sits between a quarter and a half of the equivalent new price. When a listing falls well below, find out why: a crack, a repainted frame, an older generation than the one advertised. When it goes above half, it is a recent version, a rare one, or an optimistic seller.
An older generation of a family you like is often the best deal on the market. On one condition: the frame you buy is not "the model", it is one copy of it. Two copies of the same model have neither exactly the same mass nor the same swingweight.
Before you pay
Two checks, in this order:
The frame's condition: the six checks for a used racquet, two of which are invisible.
That copy's figures: mass and balance can be measured with a kitchen scale and a table edge, and the simulator shows what you would need to add to bring it where you want it.
If the copy is sound but not tuned, the workshop measures and tunes it: that is the ProSetup service. And if you would rather start from a frame whose figures are known before you even play it, Matcheur racquets are tuned to order.
Frequently asked questions
Where do these prices come from?
They are recorded by hand on the used market and given as orders of magnitude. They do not replace examining the frame in front of you.
Can a used racquet be restrung like a new one?
Yes. A sound frame is restrung and tuned like a new one, and that is often the best way to make a frame whose figures nobody knows comparable.
Which used frame suits my game?
The used racquet tool starts from four sliders about your game and a brand filter, and suggests the matching frame, with its price range against new.
