Weight doesn't hold you back — it frees you

"Go lighter, it'll be easier." It's the most common piece of racquet advice, and one of the least tested. Weight, set correctly, doesn't handicap you — it lets you relax, time the ball and hit through it. What actually holds a player back is something else entirely.
What the shortcut says. A racquet that's too light is whipped around by the ball: it twists on contact, transmits shock to the arm, and forces you to muscle every shot to generate depth. A well-placed mass does the opposite — it carries through the ball, stabilises the head, and rewards a smooth, relaxed swing. Heavier, set right, is often easier.
What really holds you back. An intolerant head (too small, low twistweight) that demands a perfect strike every time. A frame that doesn't match your game. A balance that fights your timing. None of these is "weight" — they're the wrong setup. All three can be measured and moved: the lead positions are set out in the guide to leading a racquet, and length in its own article.
One figure to frame the debate. Take two strung frames — the figures that follow are calculated with the formula below, not bench readings: a 285 g balanced at 33 cm for 305 swingweight, and a 310 g balanced at 32 cm for 320. Fifteen points of swingweight separate them — but recoilweight, what the arm absorbs on the way back, goes from 154 to 170. Twenty-five extra grams have not made the racquet harder: they have made contact more stable, which is the opposite of a handicap. Total mass says almost nothing; distribution says everything — which is why you do not choose a racquet by its stated weight. Recoilweight is calculated like this: RW = SW − ((Mass / 1000) × (Balance − 10)²).
Mass, balance, inertia — the tools of relaxation. Where you place mass changes everything: in the handle for manoeuvrability and control, in the head for plow-through, at 3 and 9 o'clock for stability. The right combination (we speak in swingweight, twistweight, recoilweight and MGR/I) brings your timing into a comfort zone where letting the arm go stops costing you precision. That's the point of a made-to-order setup.
Bespoke as liberation, not gimmick. We don't tune a racquet to add a feature. We tune it to remove what makes you tense — and let your natural stroke come out. A setup is a tool of release, never a handicap. That's what "nothing between you and the ball" means, in the hand. Six questions are enough to set that starting point: that is what the configurator does.
Why "go lighter" sells so well
The advice is almost always born in the same place: twenty minutes in a shop, racquet in hand, no ball. In that test the lightest one wins every time — what is being judged is static manoeuvrability, not behaviour at impact.
The season judges the opposite. What matters is not what the racquet weighs at rest in the hand, but what it does when the ball arrives. This is not bad faith: it is a test protocol that measures the wrong thing.
Three misreadings of the stated weight
The stated weight is almost always the bare frame, unstrung. A string job adds something like fifteen to twenty grams, and it adds them in the hoop — that is, where they count most.
Overgrip and dampener are counted nowhere. They weigh something, and they sit far from the hoop: they move balance while doing almost nothing to swingweight.
The stated weight is a nominal figure with a tolerance. Your example is not the product sheet.
Three reasons why the only mass that counts is the one measured on your racquet, as you actually play it.
Where mass should not go
This article defends mass; it does not defend every use of it.
At the tip, with no counterweight. Two grams at twelve o'clock change a racquet; four make it a different one. Without a matching pickup in the butt, you gain in penetration what you lose in set-up, and you are systematically late.
Asymmetrically. On the sides, the same mass left and right, at the same height. A two-gram difference is enough to unbalance the hitting plane, and the fault is very hard to diagnose afterwards.
On a stroke that is still changing. Finely tuning a racquet for a stroke that moves every fortnight is aiming at a moving target. There, string and tension act more, for far less.
