Why no one plays with an 85-inch head anymore (and why it matters to you)

Open a pro's bag in the 1990s: 85, 90 in² heads, all thin. Open one today: not one. It's not a fad. It's physics — the same physics that should guide your choice.

What a small head gives you. A thin beam cuts through the air better, and a small head keeps its mass close to the axis: together they give a sense of manoeuvrability and precision nothing else matches. They are two distinct parameters, and what you feel is the sum of them. On a perfectly centred ball, it's a scalpel.

What a small head costs you. Two things: a low twistweight (the racquet twists in your hand the moment you miss the centre) and little trampoline (less yield, especially off-centre). It demands perfect centring.

The problem: modern play misses the centre. As we saw with the tangential strike, topspin means brushing — and brushing means contacting the ball more often off-centre, chasing spin over millimetre-perfect centring. A tiny head punishes exactly that stroke. Hence its disappearance in competition.

Where the balance actually sits: 97 to 100. Thin enough for control and manoeuvrability, big enough to tolerate the brush. That is why our range starts at 97 — not below — and goes up to 100 according to the playing profile: 97 for the most centred strike, 100 for the most tangential stroke.

The exception that proves the rule. There is one case where you want, on purpose, a head that forgives nothing: training. Our Matcheur 50 (50 in²) is built for it — a micro-head that forces perfect centring. Train with it, then return to your playing instrument. The head has not changed: the reference point has moved. The constraint does not correct the strike — it reveals it.

Twistweight, in one definition

Twistweight is the frame's inertia about its long axis — the one running from the butt to the tip. It measures the racquet's resistance to twisting when the ball arrives away from that axis.

Two things raise it: mass placed far from the axis, meaning on the sides at three and nine o'clock, and a wide head, which mechanically moves the frame's material outwards.

So a large head resists twisting better than a small one. It also allows impacts further from the axis, since the surface is larger. The two effects do not cancel out: over the real playing area the first wins comfortably — and that is why a 100 forgives more than an 85 on a ball taken near the frame.

The sweet spot is not a point

People speak of it in the singular; there are three, and they are not in the same place.

  • The vibration node: the point where impact does not excite the frame's bending mode. That is the one that does not buzz in the hand.

  • The centre of percussion: the point where impact produces no recoil at the handle. That is the one that does not pull at the wrist.

  • The maximum-return point: where the ball leaves fastest. It sits lower in the head than people imagine, towards the throat, because effective mass is higher there.

None of the three coincides with the others. Enlarging the head does not bring them together — it widens the zone where all three are acceptable at once. That is exactly what tolerance means, and it is measurable rather than felt.

What head size does not decide

It decides neither the density of the string pattern, nor stiffness, nor swingweight. Two 100-square-inch frames can be opposite objects: one in 18×20 will send out flat trajectories, the other in 16×19 will let the strings work and raise the launch angle.

Choosing a head size is choosing a tolerance and a mass spread away from the axis. Everything else is decided afterwards, and separately.

If you already play a 93 or a 95

Do not change on principle. A small head is not a mistake: it is a choice that costs dearly on off-centre balls and costs nothing to a player who centres well.

The only useful question is one of frequency, and it can be counted: over three sets, how many balls did you take near the frame? If the answer is "a few", your head size suits you. If you cannot answer, you have never looked — and that is the cheapest observation in this article.
