Which string gauge? The right question is not the diameter

Players often ask which gauge “gives the most feel”. The question is badly framed. A string's diameter does not primarily decide what you feel: it decides how long what you feel is going to last.

The right question fits in one line, and you already know the answer: how often do you break?

What gauge really changes

  • A thin gauge stretches more at equal tension: more ball sink, more bite, a crisper snapback — the strings return to place by themselves faster after the strike. And a shorter life.

  • A thick gauge resists abrasion better and holds its geometry longer. The feel is firmer, the tolerance to wear higher.

  • Between 1.15 and 1.30 we are talking about fifteen hundredths of a millimetre. Next to nothing to the eye, and a great deal in use: those fifteen hundredths shift feel at the margin, and hours of play far more.

The breaking-frequency question

It usefully replaces all the others, because it is factual: you do not have to describe a sensation, you count breakages.

  • More than once a month → go up one gauge, if your number offers a thicker one. You lose a little bite and gain whole sessions.

  • Two or three times a year → go down one gauge, if your number offers a finer one. Wear is not your limit: you can buy touch without paying for it in useful life.

  • You never break, but the string goes dead → that is not a gauge question. It is a restringing-frequency question: a string that has not broken may have stopped working long ago.

The “I break, so I'll go stiffer” trap

Breaking fast is not a fault: most often it is the mark of a stroke producing a lot of spin, which is to say a stroke that works. You do not damp down a strength to save on string.

And above all: stiffness and abrasion resistance are two distinct properties. Moving to a stiffer string in the hope that it lasts longer is changing the answer without having changed the question. Gauge acts on lifespan directly.

Number and gauge: two separate decisions

The number, N°1 to N°7, chooses feel and return — that is the subject of the science of strings. Gauge chooses lifespan and bite. So you can keep your number and move only the gauge: the cheapest and fastest adjustment that exists on a racquet.

With one reservation, and it matters: not every reference offers the same gauges. N°1 and N°2 exist only in 1.30. N°4 comes in 1.15, 1.20 and 1.25; N°5 in 1.25 and 1.30; N°3, N°4.5, N°6 and N°7 in 1.20, 1.25 and 1.30. So check your number's page before deciding: on some references the only way to change gauge is to change number. That is a different decision, and it is taken on feel, not on breakage.

Gauge and tension do not compensate for each other

You often hear: "I'll take a thicker gauge and drop the tension." The two levers do not act on the same thing, and one does not make up for the other.

Gauge acts on the local deformation of the string and on its life. Tension acts on the overall stiffness of the bed. Dropping tension to compensate for a thick gauge gives a softer bed, not a bitier one: you moved one variable and left the other where it was.

One lever per problem. If the issue is life, it is gauge. If the issue is how the ball leaves, it is tension. If the issue is feel at impact, it is the number.

What gauge changes for the arm

At equal number and equal tension, a thicker gauge gives a slightly firmer bed, so a slightly drier contact. The difference is real, and it is modest.

It does not weigh a quarter of what material and tension weigh. If your arm is the issue, gauge is the third lever to look at, not the first: material comes first, tension second.

Measure your own wear instead of estimating it

A gauge is chosen on a figure only you possess, and it can be recorded without buying anything.

Write down the date it went on, then the date it broke, and count the sessions between the two. Do it twice in a row with the same number and the same gauge.

Two cycles are enough. If the average comes out at one breakage a month or more, you have your answer. If it comes out at two or three a year, you have it too — and it points the other way. It is the one piece of data on this subject that nobody can supply for you.

One detail that is not a detail

Changing gauge changes the mass installed in the string bed, and therefore the racquet's swingweight slightly. Once yours is settled, every number that offers it is in the string range.
