The truth of the strike: why modern tennis is played “tangentially”

There's a movement almost every good player performs hundreds of times a match, without ever naming it. It explains the shape of your racquets, the trajectory of your balls, and why your gear suits you — or doesn't. That movement is the tangential strike.

Before, we hit straight

In the wood era, players hit the ball head-on: the head was thrown straight at the target, and almost all the arm's energy went into ball speed. The racquet's acceleration vector and the ball's direction were aligned. Simple, direct, efficient.

Today, we brush

Modern play uses topspin. And to create topspin, you brush the ball: the strings rub from low to high, and the head is no longer thrown at the target but across it. The vectors are no longer aligned. That is the tangential strike.

The consequence, and it is measurable. What drives the ball forward is the share of racquet speed perpendicular to the string bed. In a brushed strike, part of that speed runs along the face instead of toward the target: it makes the ball slide across the strings, and that slide is what sets it spinning. At equal arm speed, you produce less forward speed and more rotation. In a straight line, a tangential strike is less “profitable”.

So why does everyone use topspin? Because rotation is control. A topspin ball dips (the Magnus effect): you can hit much harder while keeping the ball in the court. You trade straight-line efficiency for tactical efficiency — heavier balls, more margin over the net, safe aggression. Topspin isn't a weakness; it's a better compromise.

What it changes for your gear

If your brushed strike gives less linear energy, you have to compensate to keep depth. Three levers: swing faster (racquet-head speed), a frame with enough yield (one that returns energy), and a string that snaps back (snapback takes on part of the spin work, without forcing you to open the face further to get it). That's why a too-“dead” frame punishes a topspin player: the ball lands short.

It's not a camp — it's a slider

No one plays 100% flat or 100% brushed. The same player switches with the situation: a tight acceleration here, a safety topspin ball there, a slice (also brushed) elsewhere. Your style is where you spend the most time on that slider.

So how do you choose?

The more your game leans toward brushed / topspin, the more you need tolerance, yield and snapback. The more it leans toward flat / direct, the further you can go toward pure control and a thin head. That's the logic of our grid: an axis running from the tight strike to the brushed strike, and a frame at the right stiffness (69 RA) — enough response for the modern stroke, tuned to free you. Slice is tangential too

People associate tangential hitting with topspin, and forget half the subject. A slice is exactly the same phenomenon, the other way up: the string bed travels down across the ball instead of up.

The consequences are symmetrical. Part of the racquet speed goes into rotation instead of towards the target, the ball leaves more slowly, and it carries spin — backspin instead of topspin. It floats instead of dropping, it stays low off the bounce, and it asks the opponent to lift.

A player who slices a great deal is therefore not a "flat" player. He is already tangential, and he has the same equipment need as the topspin player on one precise point: a string that lets the strings move and come back.

What tangential hitting asks of the string

This is the most concrete point in the article.

For the ball to rotate, the mains have to slide sideways across the crosses during contact, then return to place before it leaves the bed. That return — snapback — is what turns a slide into rotation.

A string that has lost that ability, because its notches are grooved or because its strings grip each other too much, gives a ball that leaves faster and drops less. The player never says "my snapback is finished": he says his balls are going long. Material and structure decide that return at least as much as the stroke does.

What tangential hitting does not give

It does not give the fastest ball. On a put-away at shoulder height, where margin is no longer the issue, the most efficient strike is still the flattest one available.

Which is why a complete player is never entirely on one side of the slider: he brushes to build and flattens to finish. Equipment should therefore follow where you spend most of your time, not the shot you are proudest of.
