Carbon frame repair: a broken racquet is not a dead racquet

A racquet breaks, and the decision is made for you: replace it. That reflex confuses two different things — a zone that failed, and a frame that is finished.
A carbon frame is a stack of oriented fibres set in resin. When it breaks, fibres have come apart over a few centimetres. The rest of the frame — which is to say almost all of it — is intact.
What a break actually changes
Stiffness is not spread at random along a racquet: it governs what comes back at impact and how the frame holds against torsion. A crack interrupts that continuity in one place. The frame does not lose all of its qualities; it loses its continuity, and continuity is what a repair rebuilds.
Which is why a repair is judged on measured quantities rather than on a photograph: mass, balance, swingweight, before and after. If all three come back inside tolerance, the player gets back the racquet he knew.
What it restores, what it does not
It restores the structural continuity of the broken zone, and with it stiffness and torsional hold.
It restores the tuning figures, when the repair is followed by a mass / balance / swingweight check.
It does not restore the original finish. A repair shows — unless a paintjob covers it.
It does not restore a frame broken clean through at the throat or the bridge. In that case we say so before starting.
The one criterion that decides
The question is not “can it be repaired”: almost anything can. The question is whether this particular frame deserves it. A frame you have played for three years and that suits you, yes. A frame you never liked, no — a repair will not supply what the geometry never gave.
Equipment never compensates for a weakness; it amplifies a strength. A repair is no exception — it extends a racquet that already suited you.
If the frame is worth it, the repair is ordered online: the zone is rebuilt, the frame is weighed again — the repair adds two to four grams on the zone — and the difference is put back into the setup. Send a photo of the zone before ordering: if the repair will not hold, we say so before, not after.

The four breaks we see most often
The rim at three and nine o'clock. The zone most exposed to side impacts and to the ground. It is also the most repairable: the section is simple and access is direct.
The top of the hoop. Often a scrape on serve, sometimes a knock against the ground. Repairable, with a grommet inspection in the same operation.
Split grommets. Not a break in the frame, but it cuts string repeatedly and eventually opens up the drilling. Replacement is done on its own or with the rest.
The throat and the bridge. The break that decides, and the one we turn away most often. A throat split clean through does not become what it was: it can be glued, and it will break somewhere else.
What not to do in the meantime
Three reflexes cost more than the crack itself.
Do not keep playing with it. A crack under tension opens a little on every impact. A zone repairable in one operation becomes, in three sessions, a zone that is not.
Release the tension. A string bed pulls on the frame permanently, and it pulls hardest on a weakened zone. Cutting the strings damages nothing — the string has to come off to repair anyway.
Do not glue anything yourself. Cyanoacrylate runs into the crack, hardens, and then prevents resin from impregnating exactly where it would be useful. A repairable frame sometimes reaches us made unrepairable by a rescue attempt.
The string, in all this
The string comes off to repair: there is no other way to reach the zone and to check the grommets. It goes back on afterwards, and that is a line of its own, separate from the repair — tell us when you order if you want to take the opportunity to change number or tension.
It is in fact the right moment to do it: the racquet is already at the workshop, and the choice of string comes up exactly as it would at any other point in the season.
After the repair, the measurement

One last word on where: repairs are done at the workshop, at Aube in the Orne, 7.5 km from L'Aigle. We look at the frame before saying anything, and if it will not hold, we say so rather than repairing it.
