Round, hexagonal, textured: what string shape decides

A string is not a wire: it is a surface. How that surface meets the ball decides two things nothing else decides in its place — bite, and how the strings return to place after the strike.

The subject produces a lot of vocabulary and very few rules. In practice two rules are enough, and they have no exceptions.

Rule 1 — a round string does not bite

A circular section presents the ball a smooth, continuous surface. It slides — and that is an advantage: the strings move sideways on contact and then return to place, and that return, snapback, produces most of the spin in a modern string bed. A round string also lasts longer: it has no edges to wear away.

What it will not do: create spin in your place. If your stroke does not brush, no round string will brush for you.

Rule 2 — a hexagonal string does not slide

Sharp edges bite the ball mechanically. Spin rises immediately on a stroke that already brushes. In exchange, the edges wear — first where strings rub against each other, then against the ball — and the string degrades faster. A worn hexagonal loses first exactly what it was chosen for.

What it will not do: last like a round string, or slide like one.

Textured, in between

A textured string looks for bite without the sharp edge. It keeps part of the round string's snapback and part of the hexagonal's bite — and therefore, mechanically, part of both compromises. It is a middle choice in the literal sense: neither the most durable, nor the most biting. That is not a fault, provided you know it before you buy.

Pentagonal and octagonal, in the range

Between round and hexagonal, the range uses two intermediate shapes. Octagonal — that is N°4 — multiplies the edges while softening them: it bites more than a round string without wearing like a hexagonal, and it is that extra bite that makes it the most versatile of the range. Pentagonal — that is N°4.5 — has fewer faces, so sharper edges: the bite is more definite, the life a little shorter. N°5 is round: it is the choice of feel, control and predictability, and it lasts longer.

The two vetoes

  • Do not ask a round string for extra spin. If your stroke already brushes and the rotation does not come out, change the structure, not the number. If the stroke does not brush, no structure will do it for you.

  • Do not ask a hexagonal for longevity. If you already break often, the lever is not structure: it is the number first, then the gauge.

How an edge wears, and how you see it

Two kinds of wear act at once, and they do not come from the same place.

The first is string-on-string friction. The mains move across the crosses on every strike, and they notch where they cross them, in the centre of the bed. That is the wear that kills the edges first.

The second is friction against the ball. Felt is abrasive, and it polishes the surface of the string across the whole impact zone.

The first can be checked in three seconds: run a fingernail down a main string, in the centre of the bed, from top to bottom. If the nail catches in a groove, the edge has gone at that point.

A hexagonal whose edges have gone does not turn back into a round: it plays like a tired round. It has lost the bite, and it has not gained the life.

The shape of the mains matters more than the crosses

It is the mains that move; the crosses hold them and bring them back. Bite and snapback are therefore decided on the mains side.

The consequence is direct for a hybrid: putting the biting structure in the crosses and a round string in the mains means paying for shape on the wrong side. If you build a hybrid for spin, the shaped string goes in the mains; if you build it for durability, likewise. Either way, they are the ones doing the work.

What shape does not replace

It replaces neither the number nor the tension, and it does not work without them.

A sharp edge on a bed strung too tight produces almost nothing, because the strings no longer move enough to have anything to return from. Snapback assumes displacement; without displacement, structure has no grip on the result.

Which is why a badly chosen tension is never rescued by changing structure. It is rescued by changing the tension.

The order in which to decide

First the number, which fixes feel and return — that is the subject of the science of strings. Then the structure, which fixes bite and snapback. Finally the gauge, which fixes lifespan. Taken in that order the three decisions are independent; taken out of order you go round in circles, changing string every month.
